Esther Lederberg – A Pioneer in Microbiology

Born in the Bronx in 1922, Esther Lederberg was a pioneering microbiologist. Despite financial challenges, she earned a Ph.D. in Genetics from Stanford and the University of Wisconsin. She discovered a virus that infects bacteria, greatly advancing DNA research. Her husband, Joshua Lederberg, won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1958, building on her work. Passionate about Western music and medieval dances, she also advocated for women in science and fought discrimination. Though often overshadowed by her husband, her dedication to science drove her. Her positive energy and persistence greatly advanced bacterial genetics.
